On 3 August 2026, Michelin launched the Primacy 5 in India as its first locally manufactured passenger car tyre, built at its Chennai plant. Michelin has been making truck and bus tyres there for over a decade. Car tyres are new.

We were at the launch
Michelin invited its authorised dealers to the Chennai launch.
The Primacy 5 was launched under the line “Confidence Made to Last,” positioned on three claims: leader in safety, leader in comfort, enhanced longevity. Narain Karthikeyan, India’s first Formula One driver, took part in a session on the day.
That matters for one practical reason. We took the product briefing directly from Michelin’s team rather than reading it off a press release. So when you ask us how the Primacy 5 compares to whatever is on your car right now, you’re getting an answer from someone who was there asking that question.
Our tree in Chennai
Michelin runs a tree planting programme tied to its Chennai plant, which is one of the greenest facilities in its global network. Visiting dealers plant a sapling and it gets marked with their name.
We planted ours on 4 August 2026. We also planted one on the same site on 20 September 2024, on an earlier visit, and that one has grown into a proper tree.
It’s a small detail, but it says a lot about what a manufacturer is like to deal with over the long term.
What’s actually different about the tyre
Shantanu Deshpande, Managing Director of Michelin India, said at the launch that
The Michelin Primacy 5 has been developed and tested on the vehicles most driven in the country, benchmarked against leading competitors, and validated by an independent testing agency.
The clearest advantage of local production is wider, more reliable availability. With less dependence on imported stock, the right size should be easier to source and fitting delays should become less common.
More are coming. Michelin has confirmed the Pilot Sport 4 SUV, Pilot Sport 5 and LTX Trail ST will follow from the same plant in phases.
Sizes, fitment and price
The Primacy 5 comes in 16 to 22 inch fitments, aimed at midsize SUVs, premium saloons and larger vehicles. If your car runs 14 or 15 inch wheels, this isn’t your tyre, and we’ll point you at one that is.
Wheel diameter on its own doesn’t decide fitment. The full tyre size, load index and speed rating all have to match what your car needs. Send us your size and we’ll confirm before you commit to anything.
Prices start around Rs 10,000 per tyre and climb with size and speed rating. Treat that as a starting point, not a quote.
What Michelin claims
These are Michelin’s figures, not ours:
- Wet braking: 8 metres shorter than rival tyres when new, and up to 9 metres shorter once worn.
- Dry braking: up to 4 metres shorter when new.
- Life: about 8 percent longer than the Primacy 4ST.
- Efficiency: lower rolling resistance, so better mileage on a petrol or diesel car and more range on an EV.
Michelin’s comparison figures come from independent testing on a specific tyre size and vehicle setup. Real results shift with your car, your size, load, road surface and weather.
The worn-tyre figure is the one that matters most. Most tyres are tested and advertised when new, but you spend the bulk of a tyre’s life on it part worn. A tyre that holds its wet braking as it wears is worth more over its working life than one that only performs fresh out of the box.
Is it right for your car?
Not for everyone.
Worth it if you drive a midsize SUV or a premium car, you do regular highway runs to Chandigarh or Delhi, and you’ll keep the car long enough for the extra life to pay back the higher price. EV owners too, where rolling resistance directly affects range.
Probably not if you’re running an older hatchback, doing mostly short city trips, or selling the car within the year. You won’t be in the car long enough to earn the extra life back, and a cheaper tyre in the correct size will serve you better.

Warranty
Michelin India warrants its tyres against defects in material or workmanship for five years from the date of purchase, or until the tread wears down to the legal minimum of 1.6mm, whichever comes first.
Worth being clear about what that does and doesn’t cover. It covers manufacturing and material defects. It does not cover punctures, cuts, impact damage or any other road hazard, whether repairable or not. It does not cover uneven wear caused by misalignment or poor maintenance. And tyres bought from unauthorised dealers aren’t covered at all, which is the real reason to buy from an authorised dealer rather than chase a cheaper grey-market price.

Fitting and alignment
Fitting and balancing four tyres normally takes 30 to 45 minutes once your car is in the bay. Add time if you need alignment, if there’s a wheel problem, or if we’re busy.
We balance as standard, and we’ll push you to get alignment checked at the same time. New tyres on a car that’s out of alignment wear unevenly within a few thousand kilometres. That throws away the extra life you just paid for, and misalignment wear is specifically excluded from the Michelin warranty, so you can’t claim it back either.
Check your size
Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall, like 205/55 R16. It’s also on the sticker inside your driver’s door frame.
